Static palatography, linguography, electropalatography, and aerodynamic data, including the intra-oral pressure of the click cavity, never previously before measured, all combine to create a comprehensive picture of click consonants. This important work provides conclusive evidence that click consonants co-articulate, or adjust their articulation, with adjacent consonants in interesting ways.

Although clicks are widely considered to be among the most interesting classes of segments, many aspects of their phonetics are little known. This book examines how the three different click types of IsiZulu differ from each other in their production in both spatial and temporal dimensions, and considers the question of how these complex segments are integrated into the stream of speech. Strong claims have been made in the literature that clicks do not coarticulate, but there is little articulatory evidence to support this claim. Coproduction and coarticulation of the dental, palato-alveolar and lateral clicks of IsiZulu were examined using three different techniques for the collection of physiological phonetic information: staticpalatography and linguography, dynamic palatography, and aerodynamic records. Four native IsiZulu speakers provided controlled data sets of real IsiZulu words.

Results indicate that the characteristics of the front closure release are markedly different for the three click types. Rarefaction in all three click types is achieved by lowering the tongue center, with the greatest proportional change in cavity volume occuring in palato-alveolar clicks and the least with laterals. Palato-alveolar clicks supplement tongue center lowering with some retraction of the location of the dorsal closure. Quite extensive adaptation of both spatial and timing properties of clicks to the different vowel contexts is observed. For example, the dorsal closure is fronted in front vowel contexts, and before mid vowels the tongue center rises in preparation for the upcoming mid-vowel. Clicks are indeed complex articulations but they none-the-less coarticulate. This book contains a wealth of physiological phonetic data, including aerodynamic measures of the click cavity, which have never before been measured, and provides us with a comprehensive account of click consonants.

"Keddie has rendered a valuable service ... Knapp brings together, translates, and analyzes an extensive body of epigraphic material that illuminates the history and society of Hispania Tarraconensis and Lusitania. Drawing on inscriptions from cities, towns, and rural areas, Knapp reconstructs the lives of communities that flourished under Roman rule. The volume includes funerary epitaphs, honorific dedications, milestones, and religious texts, each annotated and contextualized to reveal the intertwining of local traditions with the broader imperial system. By systematically cataloging this evidence, Knapp opens a window onto the daily lives, beliefs, and identities of provincial populations, while also tracing patterns of Romanization in central Spain.

The work is both a reference tool and a historical narrative. Combining philological precision with historical interpretation, Knapp highlights the inscriptions’ linguistic features, their legal and social dimensions, and their role as public expressions of status and community. This volume thus serves as an essential resource for classicists, historians, archaeologists, and epigraphers, while also underscoring the vitality of epigraphy in reconstructing the complexity of life in the Roman West.

Robert C. Edwards also discusses the culture of Champagne, reviews trends in viticulture and winemaking, and investigates controversial solutions to the current crisis of success in a region that cannot satisfy global demand for its wines. Burawoy's odyssey began in 1968 in the Zambian copper mines and proceeded to Chicago's South Side, where he worked as a machine operator and enjoyed a unique perspective on the stability of advanced capitalism. In the 1980s, this perspective was deepened by contrast with his work in diverse Hungarian factories. Surprised by the collapse of socialism in Hungary in 1989, he journeyed in 1991 to the Soviet Union, which by the end of the year had unexpectedly dissolved. A deeply personal labor of love, The Cookbook Library traces the history of the recipe and includes some of their favorites.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0671/1374/6550/files/CoreSourceHub_0e88c719-0696-45ad-a71e-c82702c092bd.jpg?v=1781385988
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0671/1374/6550/files/CoreSourceHub_0703af35-659c-4fee-a891-93995fe8431d.jpg?v=1767695690
schindler-kings-road-and-southern-california-modernism-9780520271944
Schindler, Kings Road, and Southern California Modernism

Today, R. M. Schindler’s Kings Road House is celebrated as an icon of early modern architecture, but this wasn’t the case when it was finished in 1922. Though Schindler and his wife Pauline recognized its genius early on, its radical appearance was—and remains—incomprehensible to many. Lavishly illustrated with forty-five new photographs, this book is an incisive examination of the house, placing it in the context of the architect’s career and clarifying its influence on modern architecture and its practitioners. Little-known aspects of Schindler’s life, his relationship with his mentors, and the development of his unique theories about space enrich the narrative.

Robert Sweeney focuses on the construction of the house and the people who lived, worked, and performed there, demonstrating the building’s significance in the social history of Southern California. He includes new research on Schindler’s educational and personal background in Vienna and a discussion of the critical influence of Pauline Schindler in formulating the social underpinnings of the house. Judith Sheine’s essay places the house in the context of Schindler’s career, in which it established the basis of the spatial development of his work. She also examines the influence of the house on the work of numerous architects from Frank Lloyd Wright to Frank Gehry.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0671/1374/6550/files/CoreSourceHub_f88fbc2a-338f-4f59-82e3-f4244cd0539d.jpg?v=1767702831
prejudice-war-and-the-constitution-9780520012622
Prejudice, War, and the Constitution

During World War II, 110,000 citizens and resident aliens of Japanese ancestry were banished from their homes and confined behind barbed wire for two and a half years. Russia has one of the fastest-growing rates of HIV infection in the world—80 percent from intravenous drug use—and the Church remains its only resource for fighting these diseases. Jarrett Zigon takes the reader into a Church-run treatment center where, along with self-transformational and religious approaches, he explores broader anthropological questions—of morality, ethics, what constitutes a “normal” life, and who defines it as such. Zigon argues that this rare Russian partnership between sacred and political power carries unintended consequences: even as the Church condemns the influence of globalization as the root of the problem it seeks to combat, its programs are cultivating citizen-subjects ready for self-governance and responsibility, and better attuned to a world the Church ultimately opposes.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0671/1374/6550/files/CoreSourceHub_6724ffed-98ab-4458-aec5-65e787472b73.jpg?v=1767697680
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0671/1374/6550/files/CoreSourceHub_578ef754-7f74-4b8e-a8cb-7bad5d477c9b.jpg?v=1767696579
person-and-myth-9780520042476
Person and Myth

Originally published in 1982, James Clifford's analytical biography of Maurice Leenhardt (1878 - 1954)--missionary, anthropologist, founder of French Oceanic studies, historian of religion, and colonial reformer--received wide critical acclaim for its insight into the colonial history of anthropology.
