Drawing on extensive ethnographic research in Anatolia, Melih Uğraş Erol explores how Alevis negotiate religious-cultural identity across generations. While older generations often practice their faith quietly—shaped by memories of persecution and social invisibility—, younger Alevis increasingly express their identity publicly through cultural initiatives, civic engagement, and digital activism. Tracing state–Alevi relations from the Ottoman era to the present, this book reveals enduring inequalities, including the lack of legal recognition of Alevi places of worship, as well as highly Sunni-oriented religious education. At the book’s core lies the “paradox of belonging”: Despite marginalization and human rights challenges, many Alevis maintain a deep sense of belonging and commitment to the Turkish state.
