With the rediscovery of vocabulary in the 1990s came a new sense of how much applied-ness is appropriate to applied linguistics. Norbert Schmitt, notably, found the sweet spot between scientific rigour and practitioner relatable research, and in this excellent volume we see that his students are more than able to carry the project forward. Not that Norbert himself will be very far away from it for a long time to come!

Paweł Szudarski is Assistant Professor in Applied Linguistics at the University of Nottingham, UK. He works in the areas of second language acquisition, corpus linguistics and TESOL, focusing in particular on the acquisition of vocabulary and phraseology by second/foreign language learners. His other interests include corpus-based analysis, replication research, and distance learning.

Samuel Barclay is Senior Lecturer of TESOL at Nottingham Trent University, UK. His work spans English language teaching, English for academic purposes, syllabus design, and second language acquisition, with a specific interest in all aspects of second language vocabulary studies.
